The main job of a phlebotomist is to draw blood and process it according to the
requirement such as diagnostic tests or donation purposes. The phlebotomist
also has other jobs such as maintaining patient record, blood workup, lab
reports, maintaining sterile equipments and patient consulting. The job is
simple but has huge responsibilities. Mostly there is no certification required
but certificates can ensure job safety and good position. And it is also hard
to find an employer who appreciates the skills without minding the certificate.
Certificates also explain that you have undergone proper training and have good
experience.
To get a certification you have to attend a training program approved
by American Society for Clinical Pathology, Association of Phlebotomy
Technicians or National Phlebotomy Association. Each institution has its own
eligibility criteria. Certification require , high school degree , class
training hours ranging from 40 to 160, sufficient venipunctures ,Clinical
training hours of at least 120, An internship , skin pricks. The training
program is always a minimum of 200 hours. Medical schools offer 1 year training
programs with 2 semester exams for the diploma certificate. An average
phlebotomy certification makes around $12.50 per hour and usually is assigned to yearly pay
around $24,000 to $26,000. phlebotomy training takes shifts and
weekly work would be 40 hours in a standard hospital.
